Alpacas in Pennsylvania

Picture
Welcome to Sugar Hollow Farm Alpacas, LLC and our alpacas in Pennsylvania! We are a small family run, veteran owned alpaca farm located in Waynesboro, PA offering huacaya alpacas and alpaca fiber products, both handmade and manufactured, for sale.

Sugar Hollow breeds for yarn.  Our alpacas are high quality animals with beautiful fleece, excellent conformation, and easy going personalities.  You’ll find plenty of density, crimp and fineness here – take a look at Matoskah’s skin biopsy results – Ian Watt of Alpaca Consulting places him in the top four of animals he’s tested for fineness and density. Our goal is to produce alpacas whose fleece will produce soft, bright yarn of the highest quality.

Come see Kathy’s hand-woven shawls & scarves, hand-knitted baby booties, warm socks, hats, stuffed animals, and dolls – all made of alpaca fiber – at our farm store and at craft fairs in the South Central Pennsylvania area. As our herd grows, so does our stock of home grown yarn (we can tell you which animal it comes from), and we have plenty of commercially processed alpaca yarn for sale, too. Interested in getting into alpaca farming? Arrange with us to visit our farm and see what is meant by “living the alpaca lifestyle”!

(L to R) Suzie, Nitza, Dottie, & September waiting to meet you!
Recently we have seen alpaca products offered online that are VERY similar to what we have in our shop. We understand about the ease of ordering items online. What you DON'T get online is the opportunity to visit with the alpacas (and llamas, pig, chickens, barn cats, etc.) that live only a few steps away from our shop! Our prices are competitive with what is offered online and there's no shipping! Please help support your LOCAL alpacas by shopping small and spend some time with our fleecy friends!

We welcome Providence Meadow Farm Braxton Blackfoot as the newest member of our herd here at Sugar Hollow Farm Alpacas. He is a three year old True Black male with outstanding fineness and consistency, solid confirmation, density, and a fantastic crimp style. We are very excited to add this herdsire to our farm to continue our efforts to produce alpacas that will produce the softest, most luxurious yarns in many natural colors. A huge thank you to Providence Meadow Farm of Smithfield, PA for working patiently with us to obtain this amazing male for our breeding program!

BREAKING NEWS! Dottie's fleece took second place at the PAOBA Fleece Show at the end of July! She scored high enough to earn an Advanced Fleece Award from the judge. Way to go Dottie!!

We sheared at the end of April and then "skirted" our fleeces to ready them for the mill. The goal is to remove the various pasture debris and the undesirable fibers around the edges of the fleece (hence "skirting"). Left is a picture of fleece from Thunder Roll's Don't Stop Me Now (We call her Dottie for short). She has an extraordinarily soft, bright, crimpy, consistent fleece that will make outstanding yarn. We will need to think very carefully about who to breed her to in order to pass this beautiful fleece on to the next generation!

The 2025 EPD calculation has been released and we have posted the results for our herd here. We had 6 of our current 16 alpacas place in the top 1% in at least one category and 4 of the 6 in more than one category! We had 6 in the top 5%, and 10 in the top 10%. There were nearly 58,000 female and nearly 33,000 male alpacas which participated in the EPD program in 2025. We are excited to see continued progress in the quality of fleece our herd is able to produce!

Ribbons aren't everything!
There are basically four ways that one can assess the quality of alpaca fleece.  The first is eyes and hands – how does it look and how does it feel?  The more fleeces you get your eyes and hands on, the better you will be able to judge a quality fleece.  The risk is “barn blindness,” which is when... Featured Alpacas

If you are interested in owning alpacas the three males listed below may be a great way to start. They have the desired fleece traits to produce amazingly soft yarns and all three are breeders. We will take up to 30% off if you take all three in one package. If you are looking for females you will have to wait until 2027 when our 2026 crias will be old enough to leave the farm.

PictureSugar Hollow Matoskah's Magic Man
Often times when an alpaca is born we can't be sure of the quality of the fleece it will have until after the second shearing. The 2025 histogram report for Sugar Hollow Matoskah's Magic Man (you can see the report here) has proven that someone could have ended up with a real diamond in the rough had they purchased him last year when we had reduced his price based on the quality of his cria fleece. The report from last spring's shearing showed he has a very fine and uniform fleece with above average staple length. These are the qualities you're looking for if you want to produce high quality alpaca yarn. His 2025 EPDs have confirmed that he is likely to pass on his fineness and uniformity to his offspring. He placed in the top 5% for AFD,  SF, and %>30; and top 10% for SDAFD (see definitions for the abbreviations here). Magic Man would be a wonderful addition for anyone interested in producing outstanding yarn, and possibly breeding for future generations of quality fleece producing alpacas..

PictureReady Teddy full fleeced!
Sugar Hollow Matoskah's Ready Teddy is the spitting image of his full brother Sugar Hollow's Louie Louie (who was sold in early 2024). He has tremendous fineness, uniformity and crimp. His fleece is currently at the mill and we expect the yarn from his fiber to be absolutely beautiful! He is just outside the top 5% of EPDs for %>30 (5.98%); just outside the top 10% for AFD and SF (10.47% and 10.07% respectively); and top 15% for SDAFD. You can see definitions for the abbreviations here. We would keep him as a breeder on our farm except that we own his sire and already have his stunning genetics. Teddy would be a great choice for anyone interested in producing outstanding yarn and possibly using him as a herdsire.

LAAF Starz Legend's Quattro took a blue ribbon in halter at both the MAPACA Jubilee and the Mid-Atlantic Alpaca Gala in 2023. Although he is a very big boy at nearly 200 lbs he has a nice, calm demeanor. Being large does have advantages however. The 2025 EPD calculation placed him in the top 1%  for Fleece Weight (actually the top 1/10 of 1% at 0.07%!). He also placed just outside the top 5% (5.77%) for SDAFD (Standard Deviation of Average Fiber Diameter). So with him and his offspring you get lots and lots of uniform, crimpy fleece!
